The overall objective of the project is to capacitate, support and guide South African frontline officials in selected mining municipalities (and labour sending municipalities) in order to effectively engage mining companies for joint obligated implementation of socio-economic development programmes/projects in relation to the Back to Basics theme. Specifically the project will:

1.     Assist municipal frontline officials in aligning the mining companies’ Social and Labour Plans (SLP) with the municipal Local Economic Development (LED) Strategies to inform the municipal Integrated Development Plan (IDP) for the implementation of high impact socio-economic development programmes/projects.

2.     Strengthen the existing capacity of municipal frontline officials through the Learning Benchmark Model, training (Project Management, Strategy Development and Alignment, Monitoring and Evaluation and Public-Private-Partnerships) and individual hands-on technical support for implementation.

3.     Facilitate public-private-partnerships/collaborations between mining companies and municipalities in order to jointly agree and prioritise Back-to-Basics interventions (programmes/projects) for implementation.

4.     Profile good practices with the aim of replicating in other mining municipalities (and labour sending municipalities).

CMRA was awarded this project by the Department of Cooperative Governance in September 2016 and will run until February 2018.
