On the 26 and 27 of June 2017, CMRA together with Department of Cooperative Governance hosted the first of the three ‘Capacity Building through the Learning Benchmark Model and Training Workshops’ which are part of the ‘Revitalisation of distressed mining towns (and labour-sending areas) through capacity building of frontline municipal officials’ project.

These workshops are aimed at benchmarking similar municipalities in terms of level and effectiveness of engagement with mining companies; strengthening the existing capacity of the participating municipal frontline officials (which engage with the mining companies in their localities) in the areas of engagement (internally within their municipalities, with the mining companies and communities), policy alignment (internally within their municipalities, Social Labour Plans, District, Province and National government – mainly on mining) and Roles & Responsibilities; and also training them in Project Management, Strategy Development and Alignment, Monitoring and Evaluation and Public-Private-Partnerships.

Officials from 6 municipalities (Fetakgomo-Greater Tubatse, Musina, Rustenburg, Mbizana, Emalahleni and Steve Tshwete), sector departments and other stakeholders (Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation; Department of Small Business Development; Waterberg Economic Development Agency and Mining CSI) took part in the workshop which was hosted in the City of Ekurhuleni.
